Remember that RV blog I started? (An update)

Issue #276

If you’ve been a subscriber for awhile, you may remember my RV Blog Reports. If you’re a more recent subscriber, you probably never heard of it. 🙂 So, here’s the quickie summary…

I started an RV blog from scratch. Just for fun. No real serious intentions with it except for one thing… I was going to blog the process of growing that blog from scratch on the Blog Marketing Academy.

I posted only 4 updates. You can view all 4 of them right here.

But, then… silence. I last mentioned the project WAY back on issue #75 of The Daily. Back then, THE EDGE was called The Daily.

It is sorta a kick in the nads to see that issue, actually. Because it says almost the same thing I’m saying now. 🙂

For all this time, I sorta dabbled with the idea of what to do with that blog. The problem has been TIME and PRIORITIES.

See, Blog Marketing Academy is my business. It is my bread and butter. This site – and all you guys – are where most of my time goes. And since it is BMA which actually pays the bills and puts food in my kids’ mouths, it makes sense that BMA is my priority. 🙂

Since the RV site didn’t make any money, it just dropped down low in the list of priorities. And, as a result, I went a full 8 months without even touching it. I didn’t log into the site. I didn’t even look at it. The site just coasted on the inertia that it had from the little bit of work I did do.

But, the other day, I decided to check out the stats. Was the site still alive? Here’s what I found:

  • In the last 30 days, the site has seen 891 unique visitors.
  • In that same 30 day period, 1,343 page views.
  • The Facebook page went past 900 “fans”
  • The email list has 1,181 people on it.

Considering what a side project this was for me… and the fact I hadn’t done a damn thing for it in 8 months… I was actually pleasantly surprised at those numbers.

The email list hadn’t grown a ton since my last check, but whatever. But, the site was still bringing in traffic.

On a related note, we were recently up in northern Alabama for the RV Entrepreneur Summit. The typical attendee of that conference is a person who is either full-timing in an RV, or aspires to. And… they’re starting or growing online businesses in order to do it. The kinds of online businesses are all over the board. The common thread is that they need to be location independent (for obvious reasons).

But, there was a pretty common theme to many of them…

Blogs.

RV blogging is pretty popular. And there is an innate enthusiasm around the idea of monetizing a blog (especially RV travel blogs). The kinds of things we do inside THE LAB would be awesome for them.

No, I don’t intend to turn that RV blog into a blog about RV blogging. 😉 That’d be… weird. Besides, BMA sorta has it covered.

But, there is obvious tie-in between the two sites.

So, I’m noodlin’ some ideas around here.

More on this later, but we’re even considering bringing Blog Marketing Academy on the road and delivering in-person workshops. Maybe even in campgrounds or near campgrounds. We’ll see. 🙂 Could be a lot of fun.

Oh, and LAB members would definitely be getting an inside scoop on any of those in-person workshops. 🙂

Anyway, I’ll share more as the details get fleshed out here. In the meantime, that’s the update about the RV blog. 🙂
