Taking inventory of your blog content

Issue #64

One thing about The Daily is that I want it to be applicable and relevant to you. While not EVERY issue is going to get a rise out of ya, my goal is that you take the ones that ARE relevant to you and APPLY them.

After all, if you’re a connoisseur of blogs about blogging, then well… that’s all good for me. 🙂 But, in the end, reading something and thinking “that’s a good idea” isn’t nearly as valuable as actually DOING something with that information.

Since we’re going to be talking about various tactics to MAKE YOUR BLOG AND CONTENT BETTERhere in the Daily, I think we need to set the stage for you to actually do something with the info I’ll be sending.

But, in a targeted manner. Like so…

Unless your blog is new, it is likely you have post archives. And in those archives, you’ve got a bunch of blog posts. The Blog Marketing Academy has 1,449 blog posts in the archives as of this email being written.

But, of those 1,449 posts… a small percentage them actually MATTER.

A good chunk of those posts are…. honestly… junk. I wrote them back in the early days and they’re just dumb now. But, they’re still there.

Your blog could well be the same. Some blog posts are worthy of being featured. Some of them represent your best work. Some of them get more traffic than others. The rest?…. well, they probably suck. 🙂

So, the first step to APPLYING some of the optimization stuff we’ll talk about is to sift through your archives and figure out which posts are worth optimizing and which are not. Then, make a list of the posts you want to concentrate on.

  • Which posts are you most proud of?
  • Which posts are the most useful to your readers?
  • Which posts get the most traffic?

Compile those posts into a list.

Those posts are ones which we can then circle back to, update, tweak and optimize.

Let’s be targeted about all this. Let’s be smart.

The 80/20 rule tells us that 20% of your blog posts will be responsible for roughly 80% of your traffic and results. In my experience, it is more like 95/5.

You need to spend your time on those posts which are doing all the heavy lifting. The rest of them?

Fuggetaboutit. 🙂

See ya mañana.
